The configuration of Ukraine's future energy system must, on the one hand, be closely linked to the country's general development plans, and on the other, meet new security realities.
This was discussed during the discussion "Post-war revival of the state's national economy and what requirements the optimal united energy system should meet during the reconstruction of Ukraine," organized by Energy Club.
Main points from the participants' speeches:
- Energy will be the foundation of Ukraine's post-war reconstruction. It is the base for all other sectors of the economy.
- In the near future, the basis of generation will consist of traditional sources of electricity production (nuclear and thermal power plants) as well as generation from renewable energy sources – solar, wind, and hydroelectric power plants.
- The energy self-sufficiency of regions is an integral part of Ukraine's new economy. To ensure the flexibility and resilience of energy systems, we need several hundred small generating objects that will provide both additional capacity for the energy system and a regional energy balance. The Soviet-era paradigm, when the system was built around large generation objects, will change.
- In the short term, the boom in solar energy development will continue.
- Very serious attention will be paid to electricity storage technologies.
- In the more distant future, hydrogen energy will actively develop. It can become a very important tool for balancing the energy system, as it will allow for the utilization of excess capacity from nuclear and solar generation without limiting the operation of solar and nuclear power plants at any time of the year or day.
All discussion participants expressed confidence that Ukraine's energy sector will emerge from the trials of war stronger and more adapted to new challenges than it was before.
